The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) has given the Tamale Teaching Hospital a two-week ultimatum to clear its outstanding debts or face disconnection.
The hospital owes the power distribution company about GH¢46 million.
A team of officers from NEDCo on Thursday embarked on a disconnection exercise at various suburbs of Tamale in the Northern Region as part of the power distributor’s revenue mobilisation drive.
The Northern Distribution Company (NEDCo) disconnection exercise affected the Tamale Teaching Hospital which owes the utility company to the tune of GH¢46 million with monthly consumption of about GH¢1.4 million.
In a meeting with the hospital management, the Managing Director of NEDCo, Osmani Aludiba Ayuba underscored the need for the hospital to pay its outstanding debts for a smooth supply of power.
The hospital however says payment of electricity bills per the arrangement rests with the Ministry of Health.
The Director of Administration at Tamale Teaching Hospital, Sena Kwesi Donkor said the Ministry of Health will certainly pay the bill but is unable to give a timeline.
“We as an institution, for now, do not pay for electricity from our coffers. It is being paid for by the government. As far as I am aware, we were asked to forward our bill to the Ministry of Health, and we did so. So the amount being mentioned used to be more than that which means the government has probably defrayed some of it. But I can’t say for a fact when the government will reimburse the money, but whatever it is, we will write to the Ministry, so it can take it from there.”
The team also went to the Kumbungu District where the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary was disconnected over power theft.
