The National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha has denied reports of its members firing gunshots at Assin Praso during voting in the Assin North by-election.
Some National Democratic Congress (NDC) observers accused the NPP of firing gunshots at Assin Praso to scare voters in some polling stations.
But responding to the allegations in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Salam Mustapha said he was not at the scene of the shooting at the time of the event but had two narratives when he later visited the scene, but both narratives do not mention that the NPP was in any way involved in the shooting.
“I was not at the scene of the event, but I later visited the place and asked what happened, and I got two narrations from the NPP side and the NDC side that it was a normal visit to the polling station to assess how the voting process is going and then some members of the NDC attempted accosting Chairman Wontumi’s delegation, it turned into an argument and the men got agitated, and it aggravated into physicals and the police got into the matter and are investigating the matter.”
Mr. Mustapha further indicated that this is not the first time the NPP had faced such acts of intimidation as it has been routine from the NDC.
“It is not familiar to this by-election alone. In fact, the other activities that we have carried out, they have tried doing such things. On Sunday when we were doing our final rally, the NDC massed up at the main road that takes you to the Assin township and was throwing shades and attacking our people, and so we had to exercise some restraint from the leadership level because we didn’t want a spectacle.”
