A two-day National Multi-Stakeholders Workshop on the Development of a Draft Implementation Plan for Recommendations accepted during Ghana’s 4th United Nations (UN) Universal Periodic Review (UPR) has been held in Koforidua in the Eastern Region.
The UN UPR in 2017 rated Ghana on a surge of violations against freedom of the media, freedom of expression, and freedom of assembly; due to that, a member state recommended that the government of Ghana must take pragmatic steps to ensure the freedom of the media and freedom of expression in Ghana.
Various stakeholders, including the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice, Perfector Of Sentiment (POS) Foundation, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), took part in the workshop.
The workshop also aimed at assessing Ghana on the human rights index of its citizens and making appropriate recommendations to enable Ghana to meet the UN’s proper protection of human rights.
The Executive Director of POS Foundation, Jonathan Osei Owusu, who, in an interview with newsmen, indicated that Parliament had been instrumental in championing the proper protection of the rights of the citizenry, said there was room for more to be done.
A Chief State Attorney in charge of the National Mechanism for Reporting and Follow-ups at the AG’s office, Madam Sylvia Adusu, pledged the commitment of the AG in implementing the recommendations but indicated that funding may be a challenge.
