The highly awaited climax of the 2023 Gas Challenge took place at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences in Accra on November 30th, 2023.
Competing fiercely for dominance were the Regional Maritime University (RMU), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), and the University of Mines and Technology (UmaT).
Since its establishment in 2019, the Gas Challenge has stood as an educational beacon, illuminating the intricacies of Ghana’s gas sector and fostering student interest in the industry.
Honourable Joseph Cudjoe, the Minister for Public Enterprises, praised the exceptional performance of the three finalists and lauded Ghana National Gas Limited Company (Ghana Gas), the event organizers, for the impressive growth of the Gas Challenge.
He highlighted its role in promoting gas-related knowledge and awareness in the community, aligning with the government’s vision for a robust gas-driven industry.
In a riveting showdown, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) emerged victorious over the three-time champion, UmaT, in the Grand Finale of the Gas Challenge.
The competition drew a significant audience, with RMU scoring 34 points, UmaT 50, and KNUST clinching victory with 55 points, becoming the second institution to hold the esteemed Gas Challenge title.
Dr. Ben K.D. Asante, the Chief Executive Officer, awarded KNUST a prize of 40,000 Ghana Cedis for their win, while UmaT, the first runner-up, received 20,000 Ghana Cedis, and the second runner-up received 15,000 Ghana Cedis.
Additionally, the finalists were honored with laptops, citations, and branded souvenirs from Ghana Gas.
Augustina Asare Osei (Mrs.), head of Government Relations at Ghana Gas and Chairperson of the Gas Challenge Planning Committee, presented a 3,000 Ghana Cedis cash prize to the top female contestant from the Regional Maritime University.
In his closing statements, the Chief Executive Officer expressed contentment in witnessing the integration of gas into societal frameworks, emphasizing the importance of understanding its properties, applications, and associated risks.
He stressed the pivotal role of such events in promoting education and awareness about gas within the system and invited all participants to return for the 2024 Gas Challenge, marking its 5th Anniversary.
