Many young people are tired of the traditional way that religion is practised. They want a faith that is inclusive, open-minded, and relevant to their lives. They want to be able to question their beliefs and discuss difficult topics without fear of judgment.
There are needed conversations about which the church is somewhat quiet or sometimes simply careful.
There are sometimes chauvinistic undertones and language from the pulpit, yet the tenets of the Christian faith espouse liberty and freedom.
The young generation does not want to simply be instructed on what to do and be. They want meaningful relationships with their faith, relationships with others, and a willingness to have difficult and nuanced conversations.
In the books #SHE and #WOMAN, launched on October 28, 2023, Kwaku Edem Damanka explores the issues of gender relations, gender equality, womanhood, and human dignity.
The event, which had people of diverse backgrounds attending, also hosted the nonagenarian and first African Woman Theologian, Prof. Mercy Amba Oduyoye, Dr. Yaw Perbi, Global CEO of The HuD Group, Rev. Isaac Nyame, and Rev. Sylvester Ayivor. Corporate leaders and persons from the media fraternity were also present.
The author through thorough research into the Genesis narrative of the Bjble asserts that the female-human was created for equal value and worth as the male-human
The author also encouraged young people to question and challenge the status quo. Using the story of the five daughters of Zelophehad as examples for community leadership, he reiterated that the creator is never offended with our attempts to seek justice and righteousness through activism and advocacy.
The author who is also known as Eric Edem Damanka believes that through research and openness to the leading of the Creator, we would find faith that is authentic and meaningful.
Asked about his experience and journey in writing these books, Edem said with a breath of hope, “I want to be able to say, Lord, I tried. I hope these bring glory to his name as it amplifies the potential and purpose of humanity, especially women”.
Some of the reviewers and attendees had this to say about the book:
This is a necessary body of work. It is timely and it is bold. This is thought leadership at its best. The subject matter is not an easy one to attempt because feminism to some Christians is a bad word. This book should lead to discussions and then lead to a change of mindset and attitude. I am excited about it! – Petra Aba Asamoah, Writer
SHE is raw, critical, provocative, and spiritually awakening to the important discourse on gender relations through God’s word, targeted at building synergy in how we ascribe value to each other. I love this book.- Susan Simpson, Brands Strategist
SHE is thorough and groundbreaking. There doesn’t appear to be a popular misconception on gender relations that has been left untouched. It is thought leadership; bold, audacious. SHE affirms some of my deepest convictions and tells me that without revelation, don’t speak. SHE is edifying and that is a testament to the work of the Spirit and good research. Pay good attention while reading, you may be navigating some form of deep. I am glad this is written. Someone might lend a more responsive ear to this “voice”.- Louise Carol Serwaa Donkor, PhD
In all societies, few attributes of the human race are as divisive as gender. In SHE: The Feminine Enigma, Edem Damanka takes the reader on a thought-provoking journey down memory lane, to the beginning of time. The author reveals unpopular truths about a well-known creation story. But there’s more. This book presents a riveting and thoroughly researched narrative on the purpose of humanity, upsetting seemingly irrefutable (Christian) teachings on gender roles. Edem has moved the needle on gender equality for good. And he does so beautifully, encouraging new conversations instead of proclaiming judgement. Don’t hesitate to take a read.- Augustine Denteh, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Economics, Tulane University, USA.
WOMAN: What the Bible Really Says About HER-story and Human Dignity challenges the ball and chain of the many chauvinistic views that limit the ability of the whole body of Christ (male and female) to function at its best. Edem, as a man, took a risk to tackle these gender issues, however his mature and balanced approach makes SHE an appealing read even to those who may disagree with his take. The book is bold and is very much needed at this time. – The Rev’d. Akua Ofori-Boateng, Priest, Anglican Diocese of Accra
WOMAN is characterised by extensive research, sound biblical doctrine and socially-relevant presentation.
Its insights and message are enlightening and transformational. –
SHE is a groundbreaking book with important contributions to the ongoing conversation about gender relations, equality and human dignity.
This book explores the complex issues emanating from the relations between males and females, and the place of the woman in society, from a fresh perspective that is informed by research, nuance, and illumination.
The author’s critical, provocative, and spiritually awakening writing calls for shift in Beliefs, challenging readers to unlearn unhealthy narratives about women that are often attributed to the Bible. Ultimately, this book aims to liberate people to fully realise their human potential and to create healthy space for all persons to fulfil their God-given Purpose.
“For many Christians who have grappled with trying to understand issues of equality, complementarity, hierarchy, and subordination in relations between men and women, husbands and wives, you may well find answers from this book that decisively settle your questions.” – Excerpts from FOREWORD by Angela Dwamena-Aboagye, PhD, Christian Lawyer, Theologian and Counsellor.
