The Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis-Xavier Kojo Sosu, is championing a legislative instrument that will prevent the government from moving holidays that fall on weekends to a weekday.
Sosu contends that the current practice of moving these holidays to working days has a detrimental effect on productivity in Ghana.
He has proposed bills to Parliament, suggesting amendments that would foster a more productive and progressive environment in the country.
Sosu emphasized the need to refrain from shifting holidays from weekends, questioning the rationale behind such practices and their impact on the nation’s growing democracy.
“If your holiday falls on Saturday, you don’t push it to Monday, it falls on Sunday, you don’t push it to Monday. Let’s be frank with ourselves. As a people, we are growing our democracy. Why do we move holidays from weekends and what do we achieve in that?”
“If we want to improve productivity, you want to work more, we are trying to work hard to help Ghana. His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has talked about the 24-hour economy, and we are hoping that the reason is to improve productivity. For me, that’s the essence of this bill so that we can work as people to improve productivity,” he said
In addition, Sosu highlighted that “The current holidays have given the president the power to change holidays that fall on weekends to Mondays.”
He expressed his hope for the bills to be approved to boost economic growth and productivity in Ghana.
