Akufo-Addo’s comments on denying Ekumfi development ‘unfortunate’ – Lecturer

Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, a Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, has criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for neglecting development in the Ekumfi Constituency.

The President admitted to overlooking the area because its residents voted out Francis Ato Cudjoe, whom he had appointed as Deputy Minister, in the 2020 elections.

During a meeting with Ekumfi’s traditional leaders at the Jubilee House, President Akufo-Addo expressed disappointment with the constituency’s voting pattern, which resulted in Cudjoe’s removal from Parliament.

Despite his appointment as Deputy Minister, the constituents still voted him out.

President Akufo-Addo acknowledged that he neglected development in the area due to the election results but promised to pay attention to it moving forward.

Dr. Asah-Asante, in an interview on Eyewitness News on Wednesday, strongly disagreed with the President’s approach, emphasizing that the President had a duty to ensure development across the country, regardless of the election results.

He insisted that all citizens should benefit from the nation’s resources, irrespective of their political choices.

“I think the president’s speech is unfortunate, to say the least. Because once you are elected the president, you are the father of all, and you owe it a duty to support the development agenda of this country. If you read the constitution, it is clearly stated that every aspect, every portion of this country should have its fair share of the development.”

“On that basis, the president has no choice whether people vote for his party or his candidate or not; he must develop that place. So it is unfortunate for us to hear that the president, from his own speech, did not pay attention to the development of the place simply because his candidate was kicked out of office,” he stated.
