The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed concerns regarding the organization of the ongoing 13th African Games.
The party is demanding the resignation or dismissal of the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, citing “gross incompetence that has led to national embarrassment.”
South Africa has withdrawn from competing in the hockey competition, due to poor pitch conditions at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium, which was prepared shortly before the competition began.
The South African team raised concerns over the pitch’s suitability for their Olympic-level athletes and expressed dissatisfaction with the overall organization of the hockey event.
In a statement dated March 18, 2024, signed by the National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi demanded “The resignation and/or dismissal of the Minister of Youth and Sports for his gross incompetence which has occasioned this monumental embarrassment to the nation.”
The NDC is also calling for the dissolution of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), calling for a forensic audit of the budget and expenditure for the preparations of the games.
“The dissolution of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the ongoing All African Games. A forensic audit of the budget and expenditure for the preparation and organization of the games. A televised probe by Parliament into the expenditure and organisation of the games.”
The NDC criticized the government’s expenditure on the games, condemning the “outrageous amount of money” spent by the ruling NPP government, which has resulted in nothing but “embarrassment and shame” for Ghana.
“The NDC is appalled by the outrageous amount of money that has been sunk into the ongoing All Africa games by the ruling NPP government, which have so far yielded nothing but embarrassment and shame for our country.”
