The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region has called on the public to assist in arresting individuals involved in the rampant theft of electricity meters and pylons.
This criminal activity, according to the ECG, not only undermines its operations but also causes significant inconvenience to the affected customers.
ECG emphasizes the importance of community involvement in deterring these thefts and encourages anyone with information to come forward.
The collaboration between ECG and the public is crucial in maintaining the integrity of the power supply system and ensuring that all customers have reliable access to electricity.
The company assures that any tips provided will be treated with the utmost confidentiality, urging the public to be vigilant against such unlawful acts.
In an interview with Citi News, the ECG Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Obeng Antwi, detailed the significant losses incurred by both the company and its customers due to the deliberate destruction of a high-tension tower.
The sabotage involved the removal of critical components from the tower’s base, resulting in the collapse of eight towers near Ejisu.
This act of vandalism has caused widespread power disruptions, affecting Ejisu and numerous surrounding communities. ECG is actively seeking public assistance to apprehend those responsible and prevent future incidents
“Not everyone who goes to the ECG’s transformers is a staff. The activities of these thieves did not only affect ECG but affected our customers as well. All we are saying is that we need the support of the general public, we can’t do this alone, because without the general public we cannot succeed in curbing this menace.
“We humbly appeal to the general public to report to the nearest police station when they see any suspicious person around our meters, poles, transformers and pylons. If you see anyone without ECG’s identifications, report the person.”
