The National Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Sammy Gyamfi has accused the Minister of Roads and Highways, Francis Asenso Boakye, of spreading false information regarding the Kumasi International Airport Redevelopment project.
Mr Gyamfi, in a social media post, highlighted the inaccuracies in Asenso Boakye’s claims during an interview with Bola Ray of Star FM.
According to him, Asenso Boakye falsely claimed that the Kumasi Airport had been upgraded to an international airport by the ruling NPP government.
He clarified that the Kumasi International Airport Redevelopment project was initiated by former President John Dramani Mahama in three phases.
The completion of Phase 1 in 2014 saw the Kumasi Airport being recognized as an international airport to a certain extent, with significant infrastructure improvements including a new runway and modern Instrument Landing Systems.
He further stated that subsequent phases of the project, which were approved and initiated by President Mahama, included the construction of a new passenger terminal building and runway extension to accommodate larger aircraft.
Mr. Gyamfi emphasized that Phases 2 and 3 are still ongoing and yet to be fully completed under the current administration.
He criticized Asenso Boakye for misleading the public and attempting to appropriate the achievements of President Mahama.
Mr. Gyamfi called on Asenso Boakye to correct his statements and show respect for the legacy of President Mahama in the development of the Kumasi International Airport.
“For the records, the Kumasi International Airport Redevelopment is a three (3) phased project started by President John Dramani Mahama.
“Phase 1 of the project was completed in the year 2014 for $USD29 million with the construction of a new 1,981-meter runway, modern Instrument Landing Systems and the provision of Aeronautical Ground Lighting, to make night flights possible.”
