Nana Gyamfi Adwabour, the Executive Director (ED) for the Center for National Distance Learning and Open Schooling (CENDLOS), has stated that the ‘Ghana Smart Schools Project’ is an extension of the Free Senior High School (SHS) initiative and the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiative.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is scheduled to launch the project on Monday, March 25, 2024, in Accra. The project is a part of the government’s efforts to enhance e-learning and digitisation.
A statement released in Accra by the Ministry of Education and signed by Spokesperson Kwasi Kwarteng on Wednesday, March 20, explained that the initiative aims to strengthen SHS education by providing teaching and learning management systems, digital learning content, and electronic devices to all senior high and TVET schools nationwide.
In an Eyewitness News interview with Selorm Adonoo on Citi FM on Thursday, Mr Adwabour stated that there was a significant number of people who still needed access to education and the project sought to ensure that.
He indicated that the project aligned with the Ministry of Education’s digitalisation agenda for pre-tertiary education and supported the government’s goal of leveraging technological advancements to prepare Ghanaian students for the fourth industrial revolution.
The CENDLOS Boss also highlighted that the project was in fulfilment of the Education for Sustainable Development Agenda, which is considered a key driver for rapid socio-economic transformation.
“The Ghana Smart Schools is to support the free SHS introduction and free TVET. It is an extension of those initiatives. You know the free SHS was introduced to create or bring access to our educational system. There is a significant number of people that still need access.”
“Any government who sits to analyse to see how we can reach those people to make sure we don’t leave anybody out, especially if you want to improve the SDG 4 agenda that talks about access, equity, and quality. So this is part of the reason why the president and Minister for Education think this is an important initiative to bring that,” he said.
