The children of the late 94-year-old ex-police chief inspector in Ketu South Municipality, Chief Inspector Daniel Mensah Kukuia, are calling for justice following disruption by a family dispute over the deceased’s final resting place.
The disagreement arose between the ex-police chief’s children, who wanted to honour their father’s wish to be buried at his desired location, and his brothers, who insisted on burying him in their hometown amidst a contentious land dispute.
The late Chief Inspector, Daniel Mensah Kukuia, had expressed his desire to be buried on the compound of his private residence in Tokor.
However, some members of the Kukuia family, led by the late inspector’s brother, forcibly took away the casket and proceeded to bury him in the disputed hometown of Amutinu.
Churchill Kukuia, one of the children of the late ex-police chief inspector, in an interview with Citi News, expressed his disappointment and shame over the incident.
He accused his uncle of having an ulterior motive and questioned the safety of the burial site, which is prone to tidal waves and flooding.
“Before my father’s demise, he said when he dies, he wanted to be buried on his compound, in his house here. So I don’t know the motive that these people, as to the body of my late father, especially, my late father’s younger brother. So I think there’s some ulterior motive this man is hatching, which I cannot fathom as at now. We suspected that these people may have something but we didn’t know it would generate to this extent. In fact, the whole scene was an embarrassing one, especially for me.”
Moreover, Churchill highlighted that the land where his father was buried is disputed, and no approval was sought from the environmental health authorities before the burial.
He demanded that the law deal with those responsible for the unauthorized burial.
“My fear is the tidal waves and the lagoon. From where he was buried, the distance between the grave to the lagoon is about 4 to 5 meters. Recently, when the Akosombo Dam was overflooded, it affected those areas, so anything can happen and that place could be flooded again.”
“Another thing is they didn’t seek approval from the environmental health people before digging the hole and burying the body over there. There was no environmental health assessment to ascertain whether the area is suitable for a burial. No burial permit was granted to them so they took their power so I want the law to deal with those people drastically.”
