The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union, TEWU of TUC Ghana, has elected new National Officers, with a female emerging as the National Chairperson, making history in the union that has existed for 65 years. The new National Chairperson, Salamatu Mahamah Braimah, is the Deputy Registrar at the Accra Technical University.
The election took place at the 13th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference, of TEWU of TUC-Ghana, held at the Pentecost Convention Centre at Gomoa Fetteh near Kasoa in the Central Region.
The rest of the officers are First National Vice Chairman, Richmond Sakyi, Second National Vice Chairperson, Olivia Oparebia Obuobi, General Secretary, King James Azortibah, Deputy General Secretary, Charles Kofi Osei, First National Trustee, Fati Bintu Adamu and Second National Trustee, Ken Botchway.
Salamatu Mahamah Braimah, the new National Chairperson of TEWU of TUC Ghana, until the election was the Union’s Second National Vice Chairperson. She succeeds Mr. Ambrose Yao Kwadzodza, the immediate past National Chairman.
The new General Secretary, Mr King James Azortibah who took over from Mark Dankyira Korankye, as the chief scribe,
until his election was the Chief Finance Officer of TEWU of TUC Ghana. The immediate past Deputy General Secretary, Mr. Charles Kofi Osei, was re-elected for the same position.
Deputy TUC Secretary General, Joshua Ansah, swore the new National Officers of TEWU of TUC-Ghana, into office, and charged them not to betray the trust and confidence reposed in them by the members.
The new National Chairperson, Salamatu Mahamah Braimah, said as new leaders of TEWU of TUC, they are poised to work for rapid transformation of the union aimed at securing enhanced working conditions for members. She promised that the leadership would ensure inclusivity, and work hard to improve the union’s visibility through innovative programmes and projects.
The newly elected General Secretary, King James Azortibah, said the leadership believes in constructive engagement with all social partners, but warned that any deliberate delay tactics by the social partners, especially employers, during negotiations on the demands of members will not be entertained.
He indicated that the new leadership of TEWU of TUC-Ghana, will not hesitate to call members to action to push for what is legitimately due them if the need arises.
Both Madam Braimah and Mr. Azortibah, shared some thoughts on the country’s forthcoming general election, in December and urged the various political party leaders and their supporters to guard against statements that can disturb the country’s peace and security, stressing that workers need a peaceful environment to continue their contributions to the national development efforts.
