Demand for pets on the rise in Accra

There is a growing demand for pets and their related products in Accra, despite the average price of a dog ranging between GHS3,000 and GHS10,000.

Out of the top 20 items for national and household-level issues for wider engagement collected for the April 2024 inflation analysis, pets and related products ranked 5th, up from the 8th position last month.

Away from the everyday businesses springing up in the cities, Citi News put a spotlight on pets and their related products.

With an increasing number of households welcoming pets into their homes, the potential demand for pet-related products and services could surge. Although this business carries little weight in the basket for national inflation analysis, beyond companionship and replacing human guards at certain households and entities, keeping pets is creating jobs for people seeking alternative means of income.

Bernice Dakoa, who has been selling dogs and their accessories around the Achimota Golf Park enclave, believes that the business of selling pets and pet products shows no signs of slowing down.

William Larbi Ampofo, a veterinary technical officer who operates an online shop, explains that though the business has witnessed some growth, it is confronted with some challenges.

Some patrons of pets and their related products, who declined to speak on record, also noted the significant amount of money they commit to maintaining their furry friends.
