As part of its commitment to the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, Helios Towers, a leading telecommunications towers company in Africa, is urging organisations and employees to foster a culture of safety in the workplace.
This initiative aims to create a conducive environment that enhances productivity while minimising potential harm.
The World Day for Safety and Health at Work, established by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), is a crucial platform for promoting awareness of occupational safety and health standards that are marked every April 28th. The telecommunications sector, known for its inherent risks, has seen Helios Towers steadfastly committed to ensuring workplace safety over the years.
This commitment has led to significant milestones, including a 45% decrease in the frequency of road traffic accidents since 2019, especially as workers travel to nationwide tower sites.
In an interview with Citi Business News, Angelo Govina, Managing Director of Helios Towers, highlighted the ongoing efforts to maintain safety standards.
“Safety is a continuous journey. We need to continuously be working to ensure that we are promoting safety . It is not a question of people not taken safety serious but we take it upon ourselves to see what we can do to promote, remind and embed the [safety] culture in people.
“The message is simple. To workers out there and people who are involved in work that are a little risky or dangerous, safety is about you. Safety is not about the work but it is about you to be able to protect yourself and return home safe,” Angelo Govina said.
He stressed the importance of cultivating a safety culture among both organisations and employees.
At the same event, Daniel Delali Adanu, the Health, Safety, and Wellbeing Manager at Telecel Ghana, a partner of Helios Towers, emphasised the importance of safety in the face of changing climatic conditions.
“Exposure to heat alone can affect people so much that our aim of reducing incidents and accidents can easily get there [high]. We should have strict adherence to break periods. I know we are in a very fast paced,” Mr Delali Adanu advised
One of the awardees expressed appreciation for the recognition.
“I have never received such an award before. This is my first time I am receiving such an award. This one will motivate me to do more when on site. I think next year too I will receive it because I know that when you do something right at the site, they [Helios Towers] will congratulate you” Francis Awotwi, a rigger with MPI told Citi Business News.
To commemorate the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, Helios Towers also honoured staff members who have shown exceptional dedication to upholding safety standards at their workplaces.
