The Eastern Regional Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) of Senior High Schools has contracted the services of some private tanker operators to supply water to schools that have suffered disconnection by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) over debts.
According to the Eastern Regional PTA, they have taken up the matter to ensure that academic work is not entirely affected by the students’ search for water.
The Eastern Regional PTA Chairman, Joshua Terkpernor, appealed to the government to come to the aid of the schools.
“We heard about it in November 2023, but we thought it was something they could handle. However, before reopening this year, we got to know that the situation was very serious. I contacted some heads who admitted owing GWCL. They complained of their inability to pay the huge debts, so they are relying on the central government to pay the debts. They have been doing their best to get water for the students; those who have boreholes have been relying on them.”
Sanitation is not the best in the schools; the lack of water poses health risks to the schools. I’m appealing to the government to come to their aid. The PTA is taking the matter up to see how best we can assist; some of them have already taken the matter up,” he said.
Meanwhile, Citi News can confirm that processes are underway to get the issues resolved with the Ghana Water Company Limited for them to restore supply to all the affected schools.
In an interview with Citi News, the Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Emmanuel Acheampong, assured that payments will be made by next week to the water distribution company for water to be restored to the affected schools.
