Inhabitants of Antiaku in the Ga Central Municipality have raised concerns, considering the poor state of a culvert, which also serves as a bridge in the vicinity.
The culvert, according to residents, now lies as a death trap, endangering the lives of pedestrians and drivers.
They added that it has been in this state for about a year now but have had their complaints to authorities met with no response.
Speaking to Citi News, some school children expressed their views on the danger the culvert poses when crossing the bridge to school.
“We feel afraid. It can break anytime. The cars too pass there so we are afraid of passing.”
When asked about the state of the road when it rains, the pupil answered, “It’s not good. It’s bad. When we went to school on Friday, our bridge wasn’t good. It was broken and then the trees too fell,” she complained.
Another pupil also included his view on the situation of the road.
“This road is not good at all. If it rains, everything will fall. If a student makes a mistake while crossing, he/she will stumble. One day I was passing on the bridge and mistakenly fell. My uniform was soiled. I didn’t know what else to do. So they should inform the authorities to come and fix it.
“This road is not good. When it rains, the whole place becomes muddy, unless we pass through the bushes. And if care is not taken, you can be captured in the bush,” he answered.
Speaking to Citi News, assembly member for the Antiaku electoral area, Benjamin Kwame Sewordor blamed the situation on the culvert collapsing under the pressure of the heavy downpour.
“The volume of water that passes through the other side to the other end is very huge and I’m seeing this culvert as small. They are not big. The force of the water is what collapsed the bridge. But it’s very dangerous so we have to do something quick about it. I’ll get in touch with the MCE and see what he will say. We would want this fixed.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the area, Ambrose Edward Tsegah averred that plans are underway to fix the culvert, to allow for free vehicular movement and serve as a safe bridge, especially for school children.
