Ashanti Regional Commander of Customs, Assistant Commissioner Vivian Glover, has cautioned importers against abusing the transit regime when transporting their consignments from the port to their destinations.
She emphasized that Customs Officers have intensified their checks and remain vigilant in tracking down importers who violate the laws.
This warning follows an incident where Customs officers from the Ghana Revenue Authority intercepted a Burkina Faso-bound cargo truck loaded with fish in Kumasi.
The truck was found illegally discharging its contents at a warehouse.
Customs officers, tracking the consignment, discovered the diversion and intervened as the fish was unloaded.
They secured the warehouse and impounded the truck, which was relocated to the Customs Yard at Aboabo.
Assistant Commissioner Vivian Glover said importers who flout regulations will not be spared.
“My caution, especially to some of these importers, is that they should be careful of those who deceive them into abusing the transit regime. The transit is meant for foreigners. Our neighboring countries, which do not have a seaport, import through our port and convey the goods through our country into their own without paying duty. The bottom line is that they don’t pay duty. So people want to abuse that regime by entering the goods as if they’re going to a foreign country, but then discharging them into Ghana for consumption without paying duty. They should be very careful of agents because we are now alert, we are monitoring their movements, and they will not find it easy.”
