The Intercity State Transport Corporation (ISTC) Board has promised to address concerns related to a recent appointment.
The appointment of a new Deputy Managing Director has sparked apprehension among the staff, leading to Union leaders petitioning the board.
In a statement released by the company’s Public Relations Officer, Anita Abaka-Sika, the company promised to engage with the union leaders to alleviate the growing concerns over the new appointment.
“The ISTC Board will meet with the Union leaders on Thursday, June 6, 2024, to resolve the workers’ anxieties over the new appointment, which has occasioned the petition.”
The company also addressed the issue of the frequent visits of the buses to the workshop. The intercity bus company stated that their buses are ageing and due for replacement.
Efforts are underway to replace the entire fleet, with two delegations set to depart for China and Turkey to finalise arrangements for the new fleet.
“The STC bus fleet are aged nine (9) years for the Scania fleet and five (5) years for the Daewoo fleet. By the norms of Intercity (long-distance travel) standards, they are overage, hence the frequent and prolonged visits to the workshop. They are due to be replaced.
“The company is currently making every effort to replace the entire fleet. Two delegations are leaving shortly for China and Turkey to conclude arrangements for a new fleet.”
STC also clarified the status of the arrears on Workers’ Provident Contributions, stating that they have been progressively reduced from 14 years to 4 years.
“(These four-year arrears have been largely due to the Covid-19 difficult operating environment). SSNIT arrears have been dated from 2013. STC is now current on monthly payments. The arrears have also been reduced to a little above GHC four million,” he stated.
