The University for Development Studies (UDS) has held a special congregation in commemoration of its 25 Anniversary at the Tamale City campus, Dungu.
In all, 269 persons, including six PhD graduates, received certificates for meeting the University’s academic requirements.
An Honorary Doctorate Degree was conferred on a former President of Cape Verde, Pedro Verona Rodrigues Pires, who was a Guest Speaker for the UDS 6th African Leaders Lecture series that lasted for three days.
The Minister for Business Development, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Awal, reading a speech on behalf of the President of the Republic of Ghana, commended the UDS for producing graduates whose services are essential in nation building.
He urged the UDS management to critically examine its curriculum and introduce more development-oriented courses required for transforming human capital.
He reiterated government’s commitment to addressing the myriad of challenges at UDS with emphasis on the infrastructural deficit.
He encouraged the graduands to be truthful and remain patriotic nation -builders.
He said education remained his administration’s topmost priority and thus, promised to commit enough resources into that sector.
The UDS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gabriele Ayum Teye bemoaned what he described as inadequate funding for public universities.
According to him, Vice Chancellors of the nation’s public universities have been traumatized by the situation in their institutions.
He thereby advocated Public- Private-Partnership as the best means of funding public universities.
Professor Ayum Teye urged the graduands to serve as Ambassadors of change in their localities.
He showed appreciation for the immense contributions of development partners and other sponsors to the university’s programmes over the years.
