The Bolgatanga East District Assembly has successfully elected its Presiding Member and is awaiting the appointment of a new District Chief Executive for a smooth operation of the assembly.
The Bolga East District Assembly together with the Tempane District Assembly in the Upper East Region was among the 38 newly created districts by President Nana Akufo-Addo.
The Bolga East assembly on Friday, April 27, 2018, unanimously voted to elect the assembly member for Zuarungo central electoral area Roland Abire as their presiding member.
Mr Roland Abire, who went unopposed, secured 14 votes out of the total 14 assembly members of the assembly present and voting, representing 100 percent.
Mr Abire until his new position as Presiding Member for Bolga East Assembly was the Presiding Member of the Bolga Municipal Assembly but hails from the Bolga East constituency which is now a new district.
Mr Abire pledged to work assiduously with all assembly members and the district chief executive to be appointed to develop the area.
He emphasized as a key to his priority, revenue generation through property rates and levies on operators at the Timber market.
Mr Roland Abire was sworn into office by the magistrate court judge His Worship Osman Abdul-Hakin.
Bolga Municipal Assembly fails to elect Presiding Member
The Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly could not choose a substantive presiding member since all the contestants could not meet the two-thirds out of a total of 40 assembly members present and vote.
The four who contested the first round had the following results: Augustine Abanbire-18 votes, Agnes Atagele-10 votes, Asaa Atamporbire-8 votes and Ayusa Jacob-4 votes.
In the second round: Agnes Atagele had 21 votes while Augustine Atamporbire had 18 votes both unable to meet the two-thirds votes of the 40 assembly members being 27 votes.
Upper East Regional minister Rockson Bukari disappointed at the assembly’s inability to elect a presiding member said, the assembly risk losing some critical government interventions without a presiding member.
He appealed to assembly members to bury their differences and for the sake of development elect a presiding member in the next 21 days.
The Electoral Commission conducted the elections and supervised by Regional minister Rockson Bukari.
