The maiden edition of ‘The Skilled African Parent Summit’ by Skill Up Africa was held on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at the British Council, Accra.
The theme for this year’s event was ‘The Changing Role of the 21st Century African Parent’.
The full house of parents and educators were treated to highly interactive and engaging discussions on ‘Creating Emotional Harmony in the Home, The Role of the Parent in 21st Century Education, The Impact of Media on Family Development and Investing in and for your Child’s Education’.
The CEO of Skill Up Africa – Dr Naomi Wallace-Bruce explained that the event was designed primarily for African parents because parenting does not come with a manual.
She stated that ‘Skill Up Africa – Africa’s Premier Centre for Personal and Professional Development’ seeks to provide lifelong learning opportunities through short courses for young adults, professionals, entrepreneurs, teachers and parents.
Rev. Patrick Otieku-Boadu gave an overview of how negative emotions can be understood and addressed.
On their part, Prof. Fred McBagonluri (President, Academic City College), Mrs Florence Adjepong (Principal, Alpha Beta School and Mr Michael Ohene-Effah (Co-founder, LeadAfrique Int.) implored parents to expose their children to other kinds of learning besides that in addition to regular academic studies.
Ms Gillian Hammah from Databank Group gave a presentation on the importance of saving towards one’s child’s education even before they are born.
The final panel of the day included Mr Kafui Dey (Presenter, GhOne TV), Dr Naomi Wallace-Bruce (CEO, Skill Up Africa) and Mrs Letitia Ohene-Effah (Co-founder, LeadAfrique Int,) encouraged parents to reduce screen time by forming close bonds with their children.
Participants of the program were treated to a garden buffet lunch, and each received a copy of the brand new ‘Skilled African Parent Magazine’ which contains handy tips for parents. They were also treated to complimentary neck and shoulder massages by Allure Spa in the City.
