The Minority Chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak, has explained that his attempt to hold the Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong accountable for purportedly insulting Parliament is not personal.

Speaking on the maiden edition of Citi TV’s Face to Face programme, he said “I’m not fighting [Kennedy Agyapong]. It is not personal at all.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”S77FxZqchEj6SDfe9z6Ck4VXKvVuFVJ0″]Kennedy Agyapong reportedly described Parliament as “useless” for having Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu as its Majority Leader on Accra-based Net2 TV.

Muntaka Mubarak insisted that it was his responsibility to uphold the sanctity of Parliament, hence his actions.

“I think that he is way overboard with the way he carries himself and the things he says about not only Parliament and Parliamentarians but others, and I don’t think that is fair to the public because of the immunity we enjoy. So it is on that conviction that I did what I did.”

Muntaka Mubarak told the host of Face To Face, Godfred Akoto, that he would continue on this trajectory whether or not he gets the support of other MPs.

“I’ve never had the fear of being isolated or standing alone. Once I am convinced about something, I do it.”

In his view, this case “is a golden opportunity to send a signal to the general public that we are ready to deal with our own.”

Muntaka Mubarak was speaking after he had appeared before Parliament’s Privileges Committee to present evidence against Kennedy Agyapong.

The Assin Central MP contends that his comments were taken out of context.

He also described Muntaka Mubarak as a dumb for referring him to Parliament’s Privileges Committee over the purported insult.

Following the verbal salvo from Kennedy Agyapong, Muntaka Mubarak called for the suspension of the Assin Central MP from Parliament.

He reiterated that Kennedy Agyapong’s recent conduct was unfit for someone in the legislature.

“If the privileges committee decides to make a recommendation, my prayer will be that he be allowed to take the full punishment and the full punishment will be for him to be expelled from the House for the rest of this session. So that will mean he will be out of this House till December [2018].”
