Former British High Commissioner to Ghana, Jon Benjamin has said that only corrupt persons are uneasy with the work of Ghanaian investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
[contextly_sidebar id=”S9dXsoCSpbqzPMkKb5o9EpUvZwqWviMR”]He said he could open up himself to be investigated by Anas as he is certain that nothing untoward would be uncovered.
In a tweet on Friday, Jon Benjamin said persons who are not corrupt and have done nothing wrong, do not fear Anas.
“My friend @anasglobal is welcome to come and investigate me. There is nothing to investigate. People who aren’t corrupt and have done nothing wrong have nothing to fear.”
The comment was in response to a tweet by a follower who said the investigative journalist must investigate him.
Anas Aremeyaw Anas has dominated Ghana’s media space for weeks, following the release of his latest investigative film titled ‘Number12’ which focuses on corruption in Ghana football.
Anas’ video featured top officials of the football association including its former president, Kwesi Nyantakyi allegedly taking bribes to influence various aspects of the game, including call-ups to the national team, the duration of playing time for some players and the selection of unfit players and referees to participate in games, among other things.
Kwesi Nyantakyi, was seen allegedly receiving a bribe to illegally secure a $15 million sponsorship deal for Ghana’s local league, acting simultaneously as FA boss and the representative of a ‘ghost’ company that would serve as agent, resulting in him pocketing about 20% of the sponsorship sum, contrary to FIFA and GFA’s regulations.
More than 100 referees were also caught on tape taking bribes to manipulate the outcome of games in a team’s favour.
The aftermath of the premiere has been described as a complete collapse of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and is seeing some efforts to rebuild it.
The government has constituted a 5-member committee to oversee football in Ghana as a 10-day injunction has been placed on the GFA.
While it is seeking a more permanent injunction on the GFA, it has also started conversations with FIFA to completely dissolve the Association.
Former FA president Kwesi Nyantakyi, has resigned from all his local and international football positions over the matter.
He is also serving a 90-day FIFA ban from all football-related activities although Anas has petitioned the world football governing body to ban him for life over his misconduct, as captured in the investigative piece.
