A Senior Divisional Chief of Awudome Avenui, Torgbe Adzesi Dzagah VI of Awudome Traditional area, in the Ho West of the Volta Region, has instituted a joint farming scheme where farmers in the area would collectively farm to multiply yields for economic empowerment.
The farmers according to the Chief would bring their resources including farm inputs together to collectively own a Union farm as well as manage their farms with support from members.
They are in that regard expected to contribute a seed amount of GHC3 each to support the project.
A ten-member committee is to steer the affairs of the Farming Cooperative Union with over 200 members.
This initiative was announced over the weekend during a development festival dubbed; “Avenui Ngoryiza” celebrated in the community.
In his speech, Torgbe Adzesi Dzagah VI said the initiative is to leverage on government’s flagship program on Agriculture and Job Creation.
“In an attempt to improve the local economy and take advantage of the government’s flagship project to ensure sustainable development of our community, we have embarked upon the formation of farming Cooperative Unions to pursue vigorous agricultural activities,” he said
He, therefore, called on government through the Ministry of Agriculture to help provide the needed support for effective management of the collective farms.
Avenui is a small farming community stretching along the Togo Akwapin mountain, having a thick green mountainous forest.
It has been recognized in the Ho West as a community endowed with Agriculture and Tourism potentials.
