President of the Ghana Real Estate Developers Association (GREDA), is demanding the firm application of the law regarding land sale and ownership to curb the menace of multiple sales of lands.

According to Patrick Ebo Bonful, the prosecution of unscrupulous persons who engage in such acts will serve as a deterrent to others.

The increasing cases of multiple sales of lands have been identified as one of the hindrances to increasing the country’s housing stock.

According to the GREDA, the challenges with land ownership especially in the Greater Accra Region has left many Ghanaians frustrated and in despair.

The country’s housing deficit is estimated to have shot up to 2 million homes with a call on government and other stakeholders to do more to reduce the deficit.

Mr. Bonful wants those who engage in land fraud to be severely dealt with regardless of their status in society.

“We need to punish those are encouraging this double sale of land and the criminals who are stealing other peoples land. Some of them are Chiefs who should be arrested plain and simple. We should make the law work,” he said.

Man in court for defrauding couple of GH¢105,000 in land sale

In a related development, a trader accused of duping a married couple of an amount of GH¢105,000 under the guise of getting them a plot of land, had appeared before an Accra Circuit Court to answer for his alleged crime.

David Botchway, alias “Sowah’, is said to have connived with one David Nii Lamptey, now on the run, to swindle Mr. And Mrs. William Opare.

He has denied the offence and the court, presided over by Mrs. Jane Harriet Akweley Quaye, granted him GH¢100,000.00 bail with four sureties.
