There is heavy security at the Ghana Bauxite Limited at Awaso in the Bibiani–Anyaaso- Bekwai Municipality of the newly created Western North Region, after aggrieved staff of the company, set vehicles and other property of the company on fire on Monday.
The workers, who were protesting poor working conditions and meagre salaries, are also reported to have set ablaze several offices including that of the Human Resource Manager, George Ampong.
A local journalist, Samuel Awuku Addo told Citi News that calm has returned to the premises.
“Yesterday we heard about the Awaso Bauxite company and the agitation coming from workers over there. Yesterday they took the law into their hands and burnt the office of the HR Manager. As we speak the security men are on the ground trying to protect people and property.”
“They are also trying to ensure that the place is calm. For now, the leadership of the company are all locked up in a meeting.”
Meanwhile, the Municipal Security Council is meeting over the issue.
This is not the first time workers of the Bauxite Mining Company had protested over conditions of service.
Some of the workers in March 2019 threatened to walk off the job unless their working conditions are improved.
