The National Youth Authority has reiterated the need for youth parliaments in all districts and municipalities in the Central Region.
This it believes would help the youth engage in discussions of national interest.
Speaking at the training of trainers program in the Central Region, the Regional Director of the National Youth Authority, Emmanuel Martey explained that the formation of youth parliaments in the various districts will give the youth a space to air their grievances.
“This whole concept of youth parliament is about democracy, it’s about good governance and participation in the democratic process. It is an additional step in ensuring that policymakers take the right decisions,” Emmanuel Martey said.
According to the Regional Director of the NYA, the concept of the formation of the youth parliament will help the youth move away from speculation.
“There is always the perception in the past that decisions are taken from the top but history has it that when decisions are taken from the top to the grassroots level it doesn’t impact positively but when the locals get involved from the districts and the municipalities they are able to tell their stories better,” Mr. Martey said.
He indicated that when the youth in the various districts and municipalities engage in dialogue through the youth, it helps them to desist from engaging in bad practices.
“When the attention of the youth is shifted towards national discourse, it helps them to desist from all sorts of vices that end up jeopardizing their future,” Emmanuel Martey added.
The Regional Director of the National Youth Authority also called on the participants of the training program to set a youth Parliament in their various districts and municipalities to dialogue on national issues.
“I want to urge you to set up a youth parliament in your localities when you go back. By so doing you can all engage in discussions of national interest,” Emmanuel Martey added.
