The Communications Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Mr. George Ayisi has suggested the amendment of the law to include community services and custodial sentences for people who contribute to excessive floods in the country.
Speaking to Citi News, he said the fines paid by culprits who litter are not deterrent enough to keep them from repeating the offences, hence the need for the incorporation of custodial sentences or communal labor in the country’s laws as punishment for culprits.
Mr Ayisi also spoke about the littering attitudes of people stating that it must change to prevent any future unforeseen floods in the country.
“We need to amend the laws for community services and custodial sentences to be incorporated. I think that will help because of the bad attitudes of our people. We keep hammering on it every day but there is no change. They should desist from throwing refuse especially solid waste into our drains. It doesn’t help us. They are all part of the reasons why the floods are getting worse and affecting all of us. So, our attitude must change and that will help all of us,” he said.
He assured the public of NADMO’s plan to ensure that the cities and drainages are clean.
“For NADMO, I will keep collaborating with the assemblies and doing the needed communication and sensitization. We will also be using our machines to dredge drains to allow free flow when it rains,” he added.
Floods continue to wreak havoc in parts of the capital and other parts of the country annually.
Within the past few years, flooding in the capital and other regions have become a major pandemic, which hampers economic and social development.
This phenomenon always leads to loss of lives and economic damages in many parts of the country.
Pressure continues to mount on government to explore new ideas and approaches that can be incorporated to existing structures to manage this problem.
