The Akuapem South District Assembly in the Eastern Region, says it is engaging owners of building on the edges of the mountain along Peduase- Ayimensah as part of measures to find a lasting solution to rockfalls in the area.
The Ministry of Roads and Highways had warned that it will consider demolishing structures on the mountain because it contributes to rockfall on that stretch.
Speaking to Citi News, the Planning Officer for the Akuapem South District Assembly, James Abugre said some developers have had their buildings demolished; while others have been taken to court.
“The Assembly has already started putting in measures to get the issue addressed. We are aware that people have built on the stretch, most of them don’t have permits and others have permits from our mother assembly that we were carved out from. We have sent cautions to those who do not have permits as we indicated earlier.
“Some have stopped development but others are continuing to develop. We have sent some of those who are not complying to court and those cases are pending before it. We have also started sending notices to the others who have not complied to halt development, but if they refuse to stop we will have no option but to also send them to court”.
The Assembly said it stopped issuing building permits to developers for construction projects on the Aburi Mountian since 2017.
In less than a week, two separate rockfall incidents have been recorded on the Ayi Mensah – Aburi road, forcing a temporary closure of the road at some point.
Structural engineers have blamed those constructing buildings on the peak of the mountain for the rockfall incidents.
