The Police Commander for the Nsawam Police Unit, DSP Mariam Adu Osei, has called on citizens to be patient whenever there is an issue that involves the police and other security agencies.
Her statement comes on the back of a protest by some angry youth in Nsawam blocking that stretch of the Accra-Kumasi highway after the emergency service agencies reportedly failed to show up early to rescue two young men who were trapped under a faulty pair loader.
“…the youth took the law into their hands and said that until their friends were saved, they would block the road and that is exactly what they did. However, with reinforcement of police from our sister stations, by God’s grace, we were able to ensure that there was free-flow of traffic,” DSP Adu Osei told Citi News.
“We are pleading with them that in any situation, no one should take the law in their own hands. For instance, if someone was also ill and had to be taken to the hospital when they were doing that, they could have killed somebody.”
“If we had said that we would arrest anyone, things wouldn’t have ended well. I urge everyone to exercise patience so that we can find a lasting solution to whatever issue is at hand. We plead with everyone to understand that the police loves them and are there to serve them. Whenever there is an issue, we must all come together and find a lasting solution.”
Angry youth block highway to demand rescue of men trapped in accident
According to the angry residents who blocked the road, it took the police hours to appear on the scene.
“It’s been five hours and now one [police officer] has come. We have called the police and they haven’t come. That is why we have blocked the road. When we block the road, officials will hear the reason why we have blocked the road and come and help us”
“Even if the president was here, we would block him.”
