The Ink It Foundation partnered with the Esther Ocloo Memorial Foundation, among others, to honour 12 Junior High School students under the La Dade Kotopon Education Directorate.
The 12 awardees participated in a ‘Young Writer’s Contest’ Essay Writing Competition that was organized amongst 12 Schools and 5 other non-scoring students in the Directorate.
The awards ceremony took place at the Christ the King Parish Hall where Yolanda Nana Yaa Kwakye from La Salem Presbyterian Basic School received the top prize.
Matthew Amevor of St. Maurice R/C J.H.S. came in second and Yvonne Pearl Anyetei of La Presbyterian/Emmaus J.H.S. came in third.
The Cash prize was donated by the Esther Ocloo Memorial Foundation. Two yards of cloth of Esther Ocloo was also given to the 1st to 3rd positions in addition to some books.
Their school libraries also received dictionaries and novels.
The ceremony, chaired by legal and management consultant Kofi Otutu Adu Labi, had an emphasis on literacy with words of encouragement to students to try their hands at writing.
A guest of honour at the event, His Excellency Thomas Okyere, the Consul of Botswana from the Botswana Consulate, framed this call against the idea of Africans learning the importance of writing their own stories.
“Do not make today the end of your writing and will go a long way to help you,” he said.
Also as a point of emphasis was the founder of the Ink It Foundation, Audrey Obuobisa-Darko, a published author of two books by age 12; ‘The Magic Basket’ and ‘Wahala Dey’, who also urged the students to embark on more literary adventures with their writing.
A pencil portrait of Esther Ocloo done by Ann Obuobisa-Darko, a Form 3 student of UBS Legon and the younger sister of the Ink it Foundation founder was also presented at the ceremony.
Kingdom Books and Step Publishers were also partners in the event.
