Over 600 residents of Bimbagu South in the Bunkpurugu constituency have boycotted the general elections over perceived neglect by the state.
The residents held a press conference in October 2020 to warn authorities about their intentions to boycott the election if no development came their way and have carried out their threat.
A visit by Citi News showed electoral officials sitting idle at the Kpi Kpinkpanu polling station.
Six communities constitute the Bimbagu South and residents complained that they have been starved of development despite voting in every election under the fourth republic.
Nathaniel Maayi, one of the residents, told Citi News their protest was justified because of their plight.
“We cried out to the government of Ghana to come to our aid. We don’t have school buildings for our children. There is no proper road for us. No electricity. No water for us.”
“We said until our needs are met in this particular community, we are not going to vote,” Nathaniel stated.
This wasn’t the only instance of protest on the day of the polls.
In the Western Region, residents in the Kwesimintsim constituency barricaded a road to hamper the movement of Electoral Commission officers.
The road block was to express their outrage over the bad road network in the area.
One person was arrested following the protest.
