The Presidential Candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has cast doubt about the ability of the incumbent government to oversee a peaceful electoral process on December 7.
Citing previous violent incidents that have been left unaddressed, John Mahama said the government lacks the will to address issues of violence.
“Recent events under the current President have given many anxious moments of doubt about this administration’s ability to deliver a peaceful, violence-free election.”
“The events of Ayawaso West Wuogon are fresh in our minds. The administration’s refusal to sanction persons involved in assaulting an Honourable Member of Parliament and injuring scores of people remain one of the darkest days in our democratic history,” he said.
We’ll work towards peaceful polls
Mr. Mahama was however hopeful that Ghanaians will rise to the occasion and ensure a peaceful election, despite these past incidents.
Speaking at the 3rd Peace Pact between the two main political parties ahead of the election, Mr. Mahama promised to ensure peace and preserve Ghana’s stability during the general elections.
“It is my prayer that despite our deepest fears we shall be proved wrong and Ghana will once again be proven to be the beacon of democracy in Africa. We have done it before, and we can do it again! Let us on Monday exorcize the ghost of Ayawaso West Wuogon.”
“I am John Dramani Mahama and I stand for peace. Let there be peace in Ghana before, during and after the elections. God bless us all,” he said.
He also called on security agencies and voters to ensure law and order during the polls.
