The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE), Ing. Emmanuel Nyantakyi has attributed the construction of poor roads in the country to lack of effective supervision from authorities.
Ing. Nyantakyi said this during the celebration of the Bono Regional edition of World Engineering Day organized by the University of Energy and Natural Resources in Sunyani.
“Road construction is very capital intensive. And it is worrying when these roads wear off in no time. These lead to the various accidents we see on our roads. This problem, I think is mainly due to the lack of effective supervision. Effective supervision can go a long way to reverse these situations.”
“In fact, some of these contractors do not use the certified materials in construction,” he bemoaned.
Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has declared 2021 as the “second year of roads”.
Delivering his inaugural speech on Thursday, January 7, 2021, President Nana Akufo-Addo said he will largely focus and prioritize road projects to improve infrastructure this year.
“Our roads are being constructed at a faster pace than before, and yes, there are still many more kilometers to construct. We defined last year as the year of roads. This year will be the second year of roads as we continue with our focus on dealing with the deficits of our road infrastructure.”
