We’ll work to prevent car crashes on Pokuase interchange – NRSA

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has said sensitization of motorists who ply the four-tier Pokuase interchange will be enhanced following the increasing number of vehicular crashes being recorded around the project.

According to the NRSA, it is prudent to educate drivers to reduce the staggering number of road crashes recorded nationwide.

Speaking to Citi News after inspecting the interchange, Director of Planning and Programmes at NRSA, David Osafo Adonteng said his outfit will ensure that crashes around the interchange drop drastically.

He added that they will have personnel around the project to educate road users on its usage.

According to him, the NRSA will not allow the Pokuase interchange project to add on to the already increasing road deaths in Ghana.

“The next six months getting to the end of December 2021, we will be here all the time to support people to use the facility and get used to it because if we don’t do that, then we will be adding on to the deaths that we are recording.”

“Within six months, we have already recorded 1,450 deaths, a 27% increase compared to last year. So we will work very hard to ensure we minimise the deaths and the injuries on our roads.”

About the project

The Pokuase Interchange is a four-tier interchange situated at Pokuase Junction, connecting motorists to Awoshie, Kwabenya, Amasaman and Achimota.

The project is being undertaken by Messrs China Zhongmei Engineering Company Limited.

The sod-cutting ceremony for work to start was done in July 2018, with the project initially expected to be completed in October 2020, but that was changed to March 2021.

The government, in May 2021, said the project would be completed in the first week of July 2021.

The four-tier interchange project is the first of its kind in West Africa.
