The Youth Employment Agency (YEA) has assured that Community Health Workers will not adulterate the healthcare profession, neither will they compete for space with other professional health workers.
This follows concerns raised by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).
GRNMA had claimed that attempts by the government to re-introduce the training of community health workers threaten the work of their members.
A week ago, the Ghana Health Service and the Youth Employment Agency signed an agreement, to recruit and train 3,000 persons for the community healthcare module.
The recruits will be tasked to support healthcare delivery in rural areas across the country.
Reacting to concerns by the GRNMA, the Head of Corporate Affairs at the agency, Emmanuel Akwasi Afriyie, said the YEA will engage the GRNMA to address their concerns.
“We have made plans to engage them because we saw their release days ago. We can assure them that these are not coming in to replace or compete with them. They are only coming in to assist in preventive healthcare.”
“We want them to rest assured that no such thing will happen. We understand their fears that because of the community health workers, their backlog of people will not be employed.”
