In Part Two of ‘Places of Historical Significance’, Steve Ababio was the virtual tour guide on the On-air series of the Heritage Month on Citi TV and Citi FM.
Beginning from Accra, Steve went through the Volta Region where he appeared more fascinated. He mentioned the two routes to the Volta Region; Tema through Ada, or Adome Bridge through Sokakope.
Moving through Sokakope, there are two routes via North and south, with each giving the traveller a different experience.
Doing the north is more visually interesting and exciting with the different landscapes and features along the way. Beaches in Keta are way different from the ones we see in Accra and Central Region.
He says the Volta Region is a broad sea turtle nesting area, but unfortunately, the turtles are also being used for meals.
“Unfortunately, we are eating all the turtles. These mammals are the same ones people travel to see as tourist attractions watching people swim with them.”
The Adaklu mountain, in Ho, is another beautiful sight to behold, and so is the Monkey sanctuary heading towards the Afadjato.
The Avateme area is also a beautiful stop with very beautiful people, and Mount Gemi is also a site to visit.
The Landscapes, the towns, and the people make it a beautiful experience in the Volta Region, he says.
Moving to the Eastern Region, he talked about some beautiful waterfalls to the north of a town known as Asesewa.
“Asesewa has some incredible landscapes, the roads are bad though, I would not advice you ply the road if you have a small car”.
“Filming waterfalls are fascinating, to see the waterfall from a height in certain quantities and creating a pool in itself.”
Eastern and Volta Regions are the best for waterfalls, with ‘Wili Falls’ being the highest. It has an upper and lower fall. The upper fall forms a pool and then falls again and then there is a pool at the lower fall.
“Kwahu is interesting, in approaching the rocks and then to Nkwakwa. The most striking experience is the architectural edifices in the mountains” he noted.
He however thinks these buildings should be converted to a money-making machine since they are mostly empty.
“I think these edifices were built as statement edifices, they can be hired out to keep it from breaking, as buildings can begin cracking when left empty for too long.”
For the Cocoa experience, Mampong, and Bonso Eco park and the intriguing Akwamufie that houses the key to the Osu Castle in Greater Accra.
On the Akwamu Gorge is a bird that is rare around the world. Picathartes can be found on the gorge. Atimpoku has a statue of Asomaning.
Touring the Ashanti Region, definitely the Manhyia Palace, Lake Bosomtwe, Bonwire, Military museum, cultural center, and kejetia market.
Owabi wildlife sanctuary in Kumasi for those who love to do bird watching and also a bamboo cathedral.
He concluded by saying he would entreat everyone to explore the country, as it has an effect on the mind.
“The beauty of the environment alone has an effect on the mind, your thoughts. There are beautiful places, feels good to get there, but sad when you realise that you are there alone to see some of these things.”
