The Rebecca Agroh Memorial Foundation (RAM) has donated some washable menstrual hygiene products to Al Waleed Comprehensive Basic School at Kanda.
On any given day, more than 300 million women worldwide are menstruating.
In total, an estimated 500 million lack access to menstrual products and adequate facilities for menstrual hygiene management and the situation is even worse in sub-Saharan Africa.
The challenges Ghanaian teenagers go through during their period are what prompted the RAM Foundation to take measures to contribute toward lessening the burden young girls go through every month.
A substantial number of teen girls miss school during their period to their inability to afford sanitary pads and materials and that is what inspired the June 20 donation by the RAM Foundation.
Dr. Kevin Kwaku led the donation exercise and was ably aided by Inger Kwaku, Geneva Kwaku, Katja Kwaku, Sydney Kwaku, and Brendan Kwaku in Partnership with RAM Foundation, Ghana.
The Foundation also disclosed plans to get resource persons and materials available to keep up with production for a constant supply of the products to school girls that need them.
The school authorities expressed satisfaction with the donation and pledged that they will allow students to learn how to produce these products and pads when the Foundation sets up a resource center to train people to produce them.
May 28 is dedicated to recognizing menstruation or period as the menstrual cycle occurs on average every 28 days. The commemoration of the day allows health organizations, professionals, as well as, women who experience menstruation to speak about the issues around menstruation.
