A former Member of Parliament (MP) for the La Dade-Kotopon Constituency, Sylvester Mensah, has hit back at President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for criticizing former President John Dramani Mahama over his remarks on the alleged biases of the judiciary.
Taking to his Facebook on Tuesday, the former CEO of NHIA said he was not surprised by the president’s unfortunate remarks for ‘obvious reasons.’
“Is it not true that President Nana Addo has “packed” the High Courts? Is it not true that President Nana Addo has “packed” the Appeal Courts? Is it not true that President Nana Addo has “packed” the Supreme Court? Is it not true that Ghana today has the highest number of Supreme Court judges since independence?”
“If the answer to those questions is YES, then what exactly was the president defending or attacking JDM for? Why is the president attempting to insult the intelligence of Ghanaians, at least opportunity? Has he not appointed even appointed known NPP actors to the supposed Independent Electoral Commission of Ghana who are shamelessly working to disenfranchise Ghanaians and rig the 2024 general elections for the NPP?,” he queried.
Furthermore, Mr Mensah said the Akufo-Addo-led government had actualised appointing party loyalists into independent public institutions, something which was new until their coming into office.
“Indeed the concept of NPP and NDC appointments into independent public institutions was new to our public discourse until the Nana Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government came to power. The day of reckoning shall surely come!” he indicated.
President Akufo-Addo addressing the Ghana Bar Conference at the University of Cape Coast on Monday strongly criticised Mahama’s comments, describing them as “very dangerous” to the progress of the country.
“I have gone into this matter in detail because of a new issue which has been introduced into our public discourse by no less a public figure than the fourth president of the fourth republic, John Dramani Mahama who has told the world that I have packed the courts with so-called NPP judges and that one of the key purposes a putative NDC victory in 2024 will be to enable him to balance the courts with so-called NDC judges.”
“Not only are these concepts new in our public discourse but they are also extremely dangerous and represent the brazen attack on the independence of the judiciary by allegedly responsible politicians,” he stated.
