The Ghana Police Service has declared its intention to take legal action against motorcyclists who use pavements and zebra crossings to bypass traffic congestion.
This unlawful practice of motorbike riders using pedestrian walkways and crossings in certain areas, particularly in the capital, has raised safety concerns.
In an interaction with the Trades Union Congress, Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, stated that riders engaging in this behaviour will initially receive warnings to refrain from such actions before facing prosecution.
“I also want to use this opportunity to tell them to stop driving on the pavements. They should also stop crossing at zebra crossings because they are not meant for them.
We will be coming for them and making sure that we use the process to arrest them, educate them, and give them warnings. We will document their offenses, and when it becomes necessary, we will put them before court,” the Inspector-General of Police warned.
