In the wake of the recent Akosombo Dam spillage, the Ghana Red Cross Society has issued a critical call for the fumigation of structures impacted by this natural disaster before victims return to their homes.
The spillover from the Akosombo Dam, a massive reservoir on the Volta River, triggered widespread flooding across portions of the Volta and Greater Accra Regions.
This unfortunate incident has had dire consequences, including the contamination of essential food and water facilities by a mixture of human waste and other hazardous substances, rendering them perilous for human consumption.
Addressing the press in the aftermath of a generous donation of GHC1,000 [One hundred thousand Ghana Cedis] from the Rotary International District 9104, aimed at bolstering relief efforts for the afflicted communities, the Secretary-General of the Ghana Red Cross Society, Solomon Gayoni, emphasized the urgency of fumigating the affected buildings.
“The best thing to do before these people get back to their habitat is to make sure that fumigation is done, at least to kill the germs is one of the areas, one of the gaps that we have seen,” he said.
This measure, Gayoni stressed, is crucial to mitigating the contamination that has swept through these structures.
Background:
The spillage of the Akosombo Dam has left many residents in these regions grappling with not only the immediate impact of flooding but also the long-term repercussions of contaminated food and water sources.
The call for fumigation serves as a crucial step in restoring safety and normalcy to the affected areas and aligns with the overarching mission of the Ghana Red Cross Society to provide relief to those in need during times of crisis.
