Eunice Lasi, the New Patriotic Party’s former parliamentary candidate for the Sege Constituency, has defended her decision to resign from the party.
Madam Lasi, during a press conference on December 12, officially declared her intention to contest the Sege seat as an independent candidate in the 2024 elections.
She placed 2nd after contesting in the just-ended parliamentary primary in Sege during the NPP’s primaries in orphan constituencies. She had 170 votes, and her opponent secured 293 votes.
During an interview on Eyewitness News, the failed parliamentary aspirant raised concerns about alleged unfair treatment meted out to her by the NPP executives in the constituency.
She also cited intimidation and her hard work, which is not being recognized by the party.
“I was with the NPP, but I see myself not treated fairly, so I decided to go my way and contest as an independent candidate. Politics is about money, time, and numbers, so if you are a candidate or an aspirant on the NPP’s ticket, and all your efforts are just going down the drain, you have to advise yourself, this is politics,” she stated.
The 2020 New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary candidate for the Sege Constituency accused the Regional Chairman and Constituency Executives of sabotaging her candidature.
“The way they treated me during our last primaries on December 2, 2023, was not fair. It was full of intimidation; they were intimidating polling station executives. Into the elections, they were telling polling station executives, delegates, not to vote for me. The Regional Chairman and Constituency Chairman said they could not work with me, so I don’t want to sit down idly and watch them.
She stressed, “So I have to go as an independent candidate. The people are still waiting for me, and I don’t want to disappoint them, so I had to find my way out. These are the major reasons why I think I have to go out. I’m just considering the people of Sege, not a political party.”
Eunice Lasi indicated her readiness to ‘happily meet the party in court’ if they drag her to court for breaching a portion of the nomination forms, adding, “They cannot bind me, they cannot stop me from pursuing my agenda.”
She asserted that she didn’t resign from the party to join Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen’s Movement for Change, stating that she will not take an offer to join the National Democratic Congress (NDC) if she’s approached.
However, the Greater Accra Regional Chairman, Divine Otoo Agorhom, said they will engage her to let her rescind her decision.
The NPP in the Sege constituency suspended Ms. Eunice Lasi indefinitely on June 12 for misconduct.
A statement signed by the constituency chairman, Augustus A. Adjaottor, indicated that the decision to suspend Ms. Lasi was a result of her consistent “insulting outburst on social media, specifically shared on various WhatsApp platforms in the constituency” which has caused “internal apathy among the party base.”
