The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) is urging the Roads Ministry and the National Road Safety Authority to promptly address the issue of defective road signs on the country’s highways.
The union emphasizes that replacing or fixing these faulty road signs is crucial to reducing road crashes nationwide.
This call follows a report from the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) on the 2023 accident data, revealing that over 8,000 commercial vehicles were involved in road crashes.
In a Citi News interview, Abbas Imoro, the Public Relations Officer of GPRTU, highlighted the significance of functional road signs in informing drivers about what lies ahead.
“We call on the Highway Authority and the National Road Safety Authority to make sure they replace the missing road signs on our roads. We complained about the Kumasi road, and the National Road Safety Authority and Highway Authority agreed to do something about it, but they have not done it.”
“Some of the road signs erected to indicate that there are bumps and rumble stripes ahead of you are being covered by sheds and other things, so we plead with the Highway Authority to ensure they are placed ahead of us.”
