The incumbent MP for the Akim Abuakwa South constituency, Atta Akyea, envisions the type of parliamentary candidate he hopes will replace him when he steps down from Parliament.
He stated that the person should be recognized as a man with integrity and character, not someone known for eloquence.
In an interview on Face to Face on Citi TV, Atta Akyea asserted, “Character and integrity, for me, are more important than eloquence. Are you a person of integrity? Can people trust you? Where is your money coming from? If you are morally crippled, how can you rise and walk? There’s nothing as important as a person’s character. All other aspects can be outsourced—how to dress well, improve your vocabulary. What you can’t buy is character, and it’s superior to anything.”
He expressed the belief that one of the candidates has integrity.
When asked if he would endorse any of the candidates seeking to replace him, he emphasized the need for delegates to make their choices rather than imposing a parliamentary aspirant on them.
“It depends on the variables of the locality. If you are a leader and you are exiting, and you realize that, looking at the individuals trying to succeed you, one can do a better job than the other, you might choose to do so. You might also choose to be quiet about it. I will leave it to the people to decide; I don’t have a favorite in this contest. As it stands now, I should have a preference because I have a sense of life and a sense of tomorrow for the constituency and beyond,” he stated.
Dr. Kingsley Agyemang and another candidate are competing to succeed Atta Akyea.
Atta Akyea entered politics in 2008 when he was elected the parliamentarian for the Abuakwa South constituency.
He competed against two other aspirants, namely, Sammy Osei of the National Democratic Congress and Nana Addo Aikins, an Independent candidate. He won the election by obtaining 22,681 votes out of the 30,109, representing 75.3% of valid votes cast. He succeeded Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who stepped down as MP to concentrate on his presidential ambitions.
Atta Akyea went on to retain his seat in the two subsequent elections, held in 2012 and 2016. In parliament, he has served on various committees, including the Finance, Public Accounts, Judiciary, and Appointments Committees of Parliament.
