The incumbent Member of Parliament for the Akim Abuakwa South constituency, Samuel Atta Akyea, is of the view that the 1992 Constitution should not be reviewed in its entirety, as suggested by some individuals and groups.
He proposed that specific Articles and Clauses in the constitution that hinder the country’s progress should be considered for review, rather than a comprehensive review of the entire Constitution.
Atta Akyea suggested that the selected aspects of the constitution for review should contribute to the advancement of the country’s democratic journey.
During an interview on Face to Face on Citi TV, Mr. Atta Akyea said, “The constitution has not been bad at all; there might be some challenges. We should examine why the review and identify the aspects of the Constitution that have not served us well. We have to scrutinize it because the journey is now 30 years down the line. Which aspects of the Constitution do we want to say have not helped us? Then we can address those, but I don’t believe in wholesale review.”
He emphasized, “I believe in a review that is case by case and very relevant, a review that will advance our democratic efforts and journey rather than impede it. So, if there are clauses or specific articles of the Constitution that we agree are impeding our democratic journey, then it’s about time we reviewed those articles. The Constitution should serve us; it shouldn’t impede our progress. If a particular article is impeding our progress, I’m afraid we need to change it and channel it towards development.”
The former Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, on Monday, January 8, 2024, while speaking at UPSA during the annual Constitution Day Public Lecture, supported calls for the amendment of the constitution.
“This practice may be worth our consideration in amending our constitution. I also know that a body of officially sponsored recommendations for that purpose exists, but I must say that my reflections are without prejudice to any such recommendations.”
