The Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) has proposed a solution to the country’s housing deficit issue.
They believe that a comprehensive policy implemented by the government could be the answer.
GhIE emphasized the importance of a favorable environment created by the government to enable the private sector to contribute effectively towards solving the housing crisis.
During the 52nd presidential address themed ‘Sustainable Housing Supply with Alternative Building Technologies’, GhIE’s President, Kwabena Bempong, suggested that the government’s role should be indirect.
He argued against the government’s direct involvement in the construction of affordable housing units.
“The government has no business building houses but must provide the necessary policy and right institutional framework for the private sector and built environment professionals to invest in the sector,” he stated.
He further indicated that “From the information presented so far on homelessness, it is clear that the housing challenges facing Ghana are huge and unless a definite and intentional policy is promoted to provide affordable housing to the poor and some form of social housing to the destitute, Ghana will not be able to achieve the UN’s 2030 agenda dedicated goal on human settlement. That is SDG 11.”
