President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on the leaders of public utilities to strive towards enhancing the efficiency and reliability of the nation’s power sector, as well as contribute to cost reduction.
While inaugurating the Kumasi One Thermal Power Project on Wednesday, the President highlighted the crucial role of public utility heads in maintaining and providing dependable power to the citizens of Ghana.
The Ameri Power Plant, commissioned in 2016, was established to address power stability issues during a period when the country was grappling with a power crisis.
The Power Plant was established under a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer agreement between the Government of Ghana and Ameri Energy Limited. However, it was handed over to the Government in 2022 and subsequently transferred to the Volta River Authority.
The decision to relocate the plant to the Ashanti Region and its subsequent recommissioning has been questioned by the minority in Parliament.
President Akufo-Addo in his address underscored that “I urge the Ashanti Regional Minister to provide the necessary assistance to ensure the efficiency and safety of this very important power station. And I charge the heads of our public utilities to work to improve the efficiency and reliability to drive down cost.”
He added, “The presence of this project in the Ashanti region and the improved electricity supply it will provide imply that we must promote even further industrialisation of our country. I invite domestic and foreign investors to invest by putting out viable commercial structures that will utilise the resources in the middle and northern belts.”
