The Ashanti Regional Peace Council (ARPC) has praised the various political stakeholders following the Ejisu by-election.
The Electoral Commission (EC) conducted the by-election on Tuesday, May 30, following the passing of the Member of Parliament, John Kumah.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, May 15, the Peace Council lauded the EC and other political stakeholders for their dedication, diligence, and sacrifice, urging for the same in the forthcoming December 7 general elections.
“The absence of violent activities in Ejisu before, during, and after the by-election is highly commendable. We plead that this same commitment, diligence, and sacrifice will be replicated in the impending December 7 general elections.”
However, the Peace Council expressed criticism towards the practice of vote-buying and inducement during the election.
“Nonetheless, the Council wishes to call attention to and categorically denounce the practice of vote-buying and inducement, which has become more prevalent in Ghana’s election system since 2008.”
They called on the public, especially politicians and voters, to refrain from unlawful and criminal activities.
“The ARPC urges the public, particularly politicians and electorates, to avoid unlawful and criminal acts, as per Section 6, 252 clause (2) of Criminal Code, Act 29, which prohibits giving or agreeing to give valuable consideration to public officers. The law enforcement agencies should make this unethical character non-attractive in our democratic journey,” ARPC said.
The Peace Council appealed to Ghanaians to continue to use proven non-violent mechanisms to peacefully address any unresolved election-related complaints.
