Presidential Advisor on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Dr. Eugene Owusu has attributed man-made challenges to hindering the achievement of the SDGs in Africa.
The challenges he mentioned include climate change, conflicts, policy failures, and COVID-19 pandemic.
He made these remarks at the launch of the SDGs Action Summit 2024 in Accra.
In his welcome address, Dr. Owusu emphasised that these challenges are exacerbating deprivation across the continent, increasing poverty, and significantly contributing to the deteriorating health of our planet.
“Less than 4% of SDGs targets were on track to be achieved by the year 2030 by Africa. The Pan African Institutions- UNDCA, UNPDC, Africa Union Commission and African Development Bank do estimate that without quicker progress towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals, close to 5 hundred million people in Africa will remain in extreme poverty by the year 2030.
“The challenge that Africa faces in achieving the SDGs is compounded by a plethora of man-made challenges. Climate challenge as all of us know, conflicts, residual by consequential effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, policy failures and misgovernance and global governance architecture.
“And all these challenges are re-enforcing the privation across the continent, exacerbating poverty, fueling instability, widening inequalities within countries and sharply contributing to the deteriorating health of our planet. These challenges are acutely undermining prospects for achieving the goals,” Dr. Eugene Owusu said.
